Celebrate Valentine’s Day by reading beautiful picture books and learning about how it all began with a biography of Saint Valentine.
Valentine’s Day is rich in ancient history and tradition, dating all the way back to the ancient Romans. Even though many might view the day as simply a marketing scheme for Hallmark, it’s so much more. We have enjoyed learning about the traditions that make up this holiday and where our current-day traditions come from. Valentine’s Day is…by Gail Gibbons or The Story of Valentine’s Day by Clyde Robert Bulla are both books that give the historical background to our modern traditions in a brightly colored picture book format.
For the story behind the name, Saint Valentine by Ann Tompert explores the life and legend of Valentine, a third-century Roman Christian priest. Learning about his life adds depth and meaning to the holiday. Also, Saint Valentine by Robert Sauda tells the story of Valentine with beautiful mosaic-inspired illustrations.
Finally, there are the fun books that are simply a delight to read. Little Bear’s Valentine by Else Holmelund Minarik is a sweetly illustrated book featuring the classic character, Little Bear. Valentine by Carol Carrick is for animal lovers. The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart is an adorable book by Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton.
