Today I made our very first “green” smoothie. In the past I’ve only made my smoothies with fruit, yogurt, and the like. But I decided to branch out in an effort to get more veggies into myself and the boys. We made Sara Janssen’s version from Happy Foody. You can watch her video to see what she puts in it. I hyped the boys up the night before, telling they were going to get a green drink the next morning. They loved it! I was surprised that they actually liked it better than some of the other smoothies I’ve made them that I would think would be more palatable. They drank all of theirs and tried to steal sips of mine!
The picture above is of our first green smoothie. Sorry it’s so lame but it was under fluorescent lights and I was too rushed to try to take it in a more complementary light. As I said it was good, although I think I’ll have to play with the amounts. I think mine needed a bit more banana. We used baby spinach as our green, but you can use any greens you’d like. Swiss chard and kale would be very nutrient rich options too.
And, I think I’m going to kill my blender if I start doing this regularly. It took 10 minutes at least to get every thing blended for the four of us and I had to do it in batches. I think I’m lusting after a Vitamix, although I shall try to curb such high dollar thoughts.

You couldn’t have turned me onto this at a better time: trying to ward off a cold while LA’s out of town. No sick mommies when Daddy is out of town!

We were on a green smoothie kick at the end of the summer and into the fall but when the weather turned cold we got out of the habit. I don’t know why it seems more like a warm weather thing to me. Can’t wait to make green smoothies with everything we get from the CSA this summer!

I know, me too!

I think it was more of a “it’s too dark to get up early enough to make one of those” thing. Plus, it was a pain lugging the Blendtec to the basement so I didn’t wake you and Liam up in the morning. ๐
Looking forward to starting that again.

So fun to see you doing this too Danielle. I made some green smoothies last year in order to hide the spinach too. John loved it as he never knew the difference because he loves fruit so much. However, lately I’ve been really slack about getting more veggies in.
Good reminder ๐

I’m feeling you on the whole Vitamix thing – I’d love one of those! It would be nice if they could make it kind of quiet, too…I heard great things about the Ninja blender.Am I actually saying these things?? I am so lame!

Oh we love them. I broke my waring blender several times making them. Aaron got me a vitamix for Christmas. Love it. We use it everyday. We use kale and chard a lot too from our winter box. Also started adding wheat and barley grass. I do variations with keifer, coconut water or almond milk. Just kind of throw stuff in myself.

It’s been awhile since I’ve visited your blog. Your baby girl is so beautiful!
Here’s my tip with the green smoothie: Blend the spinich and water first until it’s green liquid. In a regular blender, it will go a lot smoother. Then you can add the other stuff. In a vita mix (which I found on Craigslist!) you add the greens last. We love green smoothies too!
